As I told you back at the end of May, the film formerly known as Neighborhood Watch, now known simply as The Watch, is growing on me. I’ve seen a trailer on the big screen several times now and one has to give props to its impressive comedy pedigree. The film stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade (writer/director of indie-hit Submarine) and is directed by Akiva Schaffer (Andy Samberg’s SNL digital shorts producer) from a script co-written by the team of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (50/50, Pineapple Express). I think I told you I wasn’t impressed with the first trailers, especially the red-band version (which impressed me as just plain crude not funny). The last trailer actually made me laugh a couple of times. It clearly nods its head at Attack the Block, although I suppose it’s natural to want to monkey around with the alien corpse. Today we’ve got a funny new international trailer as well as a new poster.
“An outrageous comedy in which four everyday suburban guys (played by Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade) come together to form a neighborhood watch group, but only as an excuse to escape their humdrum lives one night a week. But when they accidentally discover that their town has become overrun with aliens posing as ordinary suburbanites, they have no choice but to save their neighborhood — and the world — from total extermination.”
The terrific supporting cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Billy Crudup, Will Forte, and Doug Jones. The Watch will be released in the US on July 27 and in the UK on 29th August.
