Universal has just dropped the first teaser trailer for Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) film adaptation of the mega-blockbuster, massively popular Broadway musical version of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, ahead of its December 14 US release! *demented poodle dance* It offers the first peeks (other than the setpics and vids we've shown you) at what I, for one, have been waiting for: Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius and last, but by no means least, is Anne Hathaway as Fantine.
While my initial reaction to the opening notes of her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream”, which plays under the trailer, was “uh oh”, thinking that her voice was much too thin, “How the hell is she gonna belt High E?”) as I listened, I warmed to it immensely. This is not the usual movie musical lip-synching to a perfectly polished track.
She’s singing live and the anguish that the song should convey is palpable in her performance. I had chills by the end of the trailer. You know how I feel about this, but if the rest of the movie is as good, let’s just give her a nomination right now. (Yeah ,that worked out well for Michael Fassbender. I should keep my yap shut.)
