I’m a little concerned about a movie that I have heard nothing about until the day the first trailer is released, especially one directed by Robert Zemekis and starring Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle. Flight is such a film. Here’s the really odd thing, it’s slated for release smack dab in prime ‘awards season territory’, on November 2.
In Flight, which marks Zemeckis’ first live-action film since Cast Away, Denzel Washington plays an airline pilot who makes a miraculous emergency landing. Sounds familiar right? But while we only got to see Captain “Sully” Sullenberger enjoying the spotlight and hero-worship, Flight also shows the dark side and what comes after. Cheadle plays Washington’s attorney. That should tell you something right there (even if the trailer didn’t give it away).
The very brief synopsis: An airline pilot saves a flight from crashing, but an investigation into the malfunctions reveals something troubling.
Written by John Gatins (Real Steel), Flight also stars John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood, Brian Geraghty, James Badge Dale, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly, Garcelle Beauvais, Tamara Tunie and Nadine Velasquez.
I’ll have to see more before I decide whether or not I think Flight has awards potential. It’s certainly got a fantastic cast and a director capable of getting great performances from his actor (even if his films are hit and miss). In any case it does look like a solid popcorn muncher. Take a look at the trailer. You tell me:
