“I believe there is another world waiting for us…a better world. And I’ll be waiting for you there.”
The first “trailer” for Cloud Atlas, at five minutes, 41 seconds, left me gobsmacked. It pretty much redefined what we can and should expect from a trailer, and the cinematic experience in general. Since then I’ve been eager for anything else on this epic version of David Mitchell’s epic novel. Today, Warner Brothers has given us a second trailer.
Shorter than the first by more than half, at two minutes thirty seconds, it nonetheless comes with a lot of new footage. This one is designed to play in front of WB movies between now and the film’s October release.
As the triumvirate of directors, Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski told us, it is hard to describe and will be hard to sell. The film has six storylines, spanning from 19th century England to post-apocalyptic Hawaii. in which Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturges and Ben Whishaw have multiple parts, but I’m telling everyone I know to give this a chance.
“Cloud Atlas” explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.”
The rest of the incredible international cast, includes: Doona Bae, Hugo Weaving, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant.
Cloud Atlas will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival then opens in the US and the UK (where it will open against Skyfall) on October 26. You can see the trailer in Hi-Def at Apple and the rest of our coverage here.
