Video: Behind the Scenes of 'The Hobbit' With Peter Jackson

Peter Jackson welcomes us back to New Zealand for the sixth production blog for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (being shot simultaneously as he did with the Lord of the Rings trilogy).  It features twelve plus minutes of some of the most gorgeous scenery you’ll ever encounter. The New Zealand tourism board should snap up the footage to advertise their beautiful country. Then again, maybe they don’t want tourists trampling all over it, especially considering the lengths the filmmakers went to to protect the natural environment.

These video diaries are fascinating looks behind the scenes of the movie making process. Watching what the cast and crew go through, especially in this last one, it is very easy to understand why these films cost so much to produce.  The production is huge and moving it around from location to location takes the logistical coordination of a major battle campaign.

I can’t imagine that there is anyone out there still not excited for these two films, but if there are, these blogs, in my opinion, will go a long way toward changing  your mind.

The first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Ian Holm as Old Bilbo, Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Andy Serkis as Gollum, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, as well as Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, Aiden Turner as Kili, Billy Connolly as Dain, James Nesbitt as Bofur and Lee Pace as King Thranduil (along with many many more), opens on most of the planet December 14, 2012. The Hobbit: There and Back Again is set to open December 13, 2013.
