Two people on the Thai island of Phucket were arrested this weekend after Rihanna posted a selfie to Instagram showing an endangered primate perched on her shoulder.
On a vacation from her Diamonds World Tour, Rihanna spent the weekend on Phucket. She tweeted a link to an Instagram photo on Friday with the caption “Look who was talking dirty to me!”
Perched on her shoulder was an protected species called a slow loris. The tiny, big-eyed primate garnered over 200,000 likes on Instagram and was eventually brought to the attention of local police.
"Phuket authorities were alerted to the picture (of Rihanna), and last night police arrested the two individuals who brought out the loris as a photo opportunity for tourists," Phuket district chief Weera Kerdsirimongkon told ABC News on Sunday.
A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were arrested. Police confiscated two lorises and charged the pair with possession of protected animals. They could face up to four years in prison and fine of $1,300.
Weera told ABC that the exploitation of wildlife is an ongoing problem, especially in tourist areas.
"It's like a cat-and-mouse game. But this time it's bigger because a celebrity like Rihanna posted the picture, and there were more than 200,000 'likes' from around the world," he said.
Rihanna leaves Thailand on Sunday for Singapore, then Australia and New Zealand.
