Despite the weekend sales success of Beyonce’s new self-titled album, Target has declined to offer the CD at its store.
The album was exclusively released through iTunes over the weekend and won’t be released at any retail store until Dec. 20. In protest, Target has refused to sell the CD.
“At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs,” Target spokesperson Erica Julkowski said. “When a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections.”
Julkowski added that while Target has enjoyed partnering with Beyonce in the past, especially when she exclusively released albums with the store, they will not support her new release.
Beyonce’s new album was dropped quietly on Dec. 13 without promotion or any press releases. She has sold more than 600,000 albums since it was released.
The sales have been considered a monumental success considering the no-press risk that Beyonce took.
Beyonce fans took to Twitter with the news, making fun of Target for the decision.
“Target isn't gonna sell Beyonce's new album?” one Tweeter posted. “Do they not want free money?”
