Stephen Fry on his Bipolar Disorder: "I May Well Kill Myself One Day"

Publish date:

Gosh, what a light-hearted story this is sure to be. Still, it could be worse. We could be reporting on his actual death. Oooh. That's put it all in perspective, hasn't it.

Anyway, in a recent interview with Sky Arts, Stephen Fry spoke about his bi-polarity (sounds like a word) and how it would eventually kill him, albeit via his own hands, like a sinister puppet master:

'The fact that I am lucky enough not to have it so seriously doesn't mean that I won't one day kill myself. I may well.'

Ominous. Still, he went on to talk about his love of pork pies, chutney (*smirk*) and the countryside, so he's obviously reasonably jolly at the moment.

"It is exhausting knowing that most of the time the phone rings, most of the time there's an email, most of the time there's a letter, someone wants something of you."

"I feel I would love to close down for a number of years in some way and just be in the country making pork pies and chutneys and never have to poke my head out of the parapet".

Just think, when he dies, you're probably not going to hear the word 'parapet' ever again. Unless you're a history teacher or being felt up by a history teacher.

Well, hopefully you're all impressed by the way we've dealt with this very sensitive issue in an adult and considerate way. Next week: abortion and the words that rhyme with it.
