In a time when celebrities use sex tapes to advance their careers, it was not too long ago that a sex tape nearly destroyed the career of Rob Lowe. But now he calls it the "greatest thing" to have happened to him.
Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on Thursday, Lowe opened up about the tape and what it has meant to his life, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Lowe was 22 years old in 1989 when the tape emerged of him with two girls. It turned out one of them was only 16 years old. He still insists that he thought she was at least 21. When Oprah asked when he found out she was just a teenager, he laughed and said, "Ha! A little too late!"
But Lowe said the scandal made him deal with what put him in that situation in the first place -- alcohol.
"Because what it ends up doing is accelerating my alcohol [addiction] to where I finally get sober. I have been able to have the rest of my life that I'm so blessed with, which is now 20 years of sobriety."
He added, "It ends up being the greatest thing that ever happened to me."
He said rehab helped him get back to reality. "The charade was over - now I would be forced into being who I really was, for better or for worse. I knew who I wasn't - I wasn't that guy."
He joked about the being the subject of the first celebrity sex tape scandal. "Let me just say this -- sometimes being a trailblazer is highly overrated."
