Ricky Martin says he was so overcome with emotion when he revealed his sexuality to fans, he felt “numb”.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey to be broadcast this week, Martin talks about fatherhood and why he decided to come out as a gay man.
The singer came out in March after years of staying silent about his sexuality. He sent out an e-mail announcing, “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man”.
He tells Oprah that he burst into tears after sending the email announcement.
“When I realised, okay, I just pressed send, whoo… I was alone,” he told the host.
“I was in my studio alone for a minute. My assistant walked in and I just started crying like a little baby. I started crying.”
Martin explained that he could no longer negate his sexuality.
“I couldn’t take it any more. It was too painful,” he said.
“I guess the most important thing is my children. When I was holding them in my arms I was like ‘What? Am I going to teach them how to lie?’
“That was my blessing right there. Then, when I was holding my children, I said: ‘Okay, it’s time to tell the world’.”
Martin is father to 2-year-old twin sons, Valentino and Matteo, via a surrogate.
Martin’s interview with Oprah airs in the United States on Tuesday.
