The Conjuring must have something going for it to have attracted the likes of Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston, certainly more than the simple plot line about a family that encounters spirits living among them in their New England farmhouse. A plot like that sounds not only “been there, done that” but also that it could end up being kind of cheesy if not handled with care. I’m hoping that the four very fine actors mentioned above (and pictured in the two new images we have courtesy of Warner Brothers) will bring some gravitas and class to the proceedings. Director James Wan is responsible for the popular (they’re making Insidious 2 as we speak) and by most accounts better than it had to be, Insidious, which also starred Patrick Wilson. Wan also wrote and directed the first of the Saw flicks, which of course spawned an entire genre.
Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. The Conjuring tells the true story of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Wilson and Farmiga), world renowned paranormal investigators, who were called to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most horrifying case of their lives.
…dun dun dun…
The Conjuring is directed by Wan from a screenplay by Chad Hayes & Casey W. Hayes and also stars Mackenzie Foy (Twilight: Breaking Dawn – part 2), Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Haley McFarland, Kyla Deaver and Sterling Jerins. We can look for it to appear in the US and the UK on July 19.
