Singer, Songwriter Phoebe Snow Dead at 58

Publish date:

After enduring numerous medical complications brought on by her brain hemorrhage in January 2010, Phoebe Snow has died. Phoebe Snow singing Poetry Man in 1989:

Snow’s manager, Sue Cameron summed up Phoebe Snow’s life as she would want it remembered.

“The loss of this unique and untouchable voice is incalculable. Phoebe was one of the brightest, funniest and most talented singer-songwriters of all time and, more importantly, a magnificent mother to her late brain-damaged daughter, Valerie, for 31 years. Phoebe felt that was her greatest accomplishment.”

After being nominated for Best New Artist at the 1975 Grammys, Phoebe dropped out of the spotlight to care for her daughter, Valerie Rose, who was born later that year with severe brain damage caused by hydrocephalus (fluid build-up in the brain). Her father, Phil Kearns, abandoned Phoebe soon after Val’s birth.

Valerie was expected to live only a few years, but instead died in 2007 at the age of 31. Phoebe Snow made sure her daughter’s life was all it could be, and it was most likely the reason Valerie lived as long as she did.

Phoebe Snow was 58.
