Official Release Date of '50 Shades of Grey' Announced

While the cast of the "50 Shades of Grey" movie has been speculated over the past few months, the only confirmed detail about the film is its release date.

The first part of the erotic trilogy is set to be released on Friday, August 1, 2014 in North America. It is likely the movie will be released at a later date internationally. Focus Features is releasing the film domestically and Universal Pictures is handling the international release.

The director of the film will be Sam Taylor-Johnson, who previously directed "Nowhere Boy." Author E.L James will produce it alongside Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti. Kelly Marcel is writing the screenplay.

"I'm so excited to be charged with the evolution of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' from page to screen. For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika's book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin, too," Taylor-Johnson said. 

Since its release, the popular trilogy has been translated into more than 50 languages and has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide. 

Among fans' top choices for the role of Christian Grey are Ian Somerhalder, Matthew Bomer, Matt Davis, Robert Pattinson, Alex Pettyfer and Henry Cavill.
