New Data Show Each State's Favorite Music Artist

A new map assembled by music technology blog Music Machinery shows the most popular top-100 artist in each U.S. state.

Paul Lamere, the data collector and writer of Music Machinery, studied the music preferences of a quarter million listeners.

“To compare regions I [looked] at the top-N most popular artists in each region and [looked] for artists that have a substantial change in rank between the two regions,” Lamere wrote.

As an example, Lamere compared the New England region with Tennessee. He compared the top 100 most listened-to artists in Tennessee with their ranks in New England. While Hillsong United, a Christian rock worship band, was the most popular artist in Tennessee, it was the 1097th most popular in New England.

Lamere found that the Southern Bible belt listened mostly to southern rappers, country and folk artists. Music fanatics in New England listened mostly to jam bands, indie and classic rock.

In addition to publishing his results, Lamere built an app to explore regional differences in music.
