Movie Review: "The Raid: Redemption"

"The Raid: Redemption" (Sony Classic)

“The Raid: Redemption” is advertised as being “the best action movie in decades.” It is certainly full of martial arts battles from the beginning of the film till the end. It is, however, a movie that is all spoken in Indonesian so if you don’t know that language you have to read it all in subtitles. Thankfully the fighting outweighs the talking.

The main character is a policeman named Rama (Iko Uwais). We know he is the hero because he has a wife and they are expecting their first child. Rama is also a member of a SWAT team that is sent to an apartment building in the heart of Jakarta. A drug lord is holed up here and the Swat team is going to take him down.

The problem is he is up on the fifteenth floor and they have to do battle at each floor on the way up. This is where all the heavy-handed martial arts scenes come into the picture. Rama is one of those supermen who can take on fifteen fighters at a time. This is because they all seem to hold back in the fight sequences and only come at him one at a time. If they had all attacked him at once he wouldn’t have had a chance.

Aside from the fight sequences there isn’t much to praise about the story, etc. The actors seem to have been cast based on their fighting skills and many of them are very impressive in the fighting. However when it comes to imparting emotion their acting skills fail them.

There isn’t much shown of Jakarta as all of the sequences take place inside the apartment building. At times this makes the movie feel a little claustrophobic. If they had been able to move some of the action outside it would have been better.

The film is rated R for violence and profanity.

If you like action movies then this one may satisfy your entertainment needs. On the other hand if you need a good plot and some solid acting you will not be impressed. “The Raid: Redemption” doesn’t redeem itself; it just keeps on fighting until the end.

I scored “The Raid: Redemption” an unredeemed 4 out of 10.
