‘This Is 40’ is sort of a ‘sequel’ to ‘Knocked Up.’ It’s another one of Judd Apatow’s creations. But unlike ‘Knocked Up,’ ‘This Is 40’ produced more laughs out of me. (I hated ‘Knocked Up.’ Not funny at all.) It was definitely a laugh out loud type of deal. And you don’t have to watch ‘Knocked Up’ before seeing this film. You’ll get it. It’s reflective of real life. It started off as depressing first, I mean, who’s looking forward to turning the big 4-0! But it did eventually turn into a ball of fun. And it had tender moments, a few drops of tears streamed down my face.
Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) play a married couple turning 40 together. But Debbie w in denial of her age. So the two decide to throw a big bash just for Pete because he’s the only one turning 40 apparently. The film follows their married with children lifestyle. They are raising two girls, Sadie (Maude Apatow) and Charlotte (Iris Apatow). As the movie goes on, the childhood of Pete and Debbie unravel. And it puts a strain on their marriage. This film shows you what turning 40 really feels like. If you haven’t turned 40 yet, you should watch this for a preview.
The film gave you an idea of how difficult it was for a married couple to hold everything together while turning 40. It was a tough struggle. Unfortunately, they failed successfully. Paul Rudd had no shame in his performance. He let it all hang out. And that gave a few laughs. There was also a sexual act scene that was hilarious because it was rudely interrupted by their kids. And I’m sure many married couples with kids could relate to that.
Debbie and Pete had great comedic support from Melissa McCarthy who played the mom of one of Sadie’s classmates. She was hilarious! Megan Fox was also in this film, and she played a ‘sex kitten,’ no surprise there! Jason Segel played Jason, a personal trainer who sculpted Debbie’s body. He delivered a few laughs as well. John Lithgow played Debbie’s dad and Albert Brooks played Pete’s dad. I didn’t find either of them funny. Maybe they weren’t supposed to be funny?
Judd Apatow sneaked in a serious issue in between laughs though, the relationship adults have with their parents. Debbie had a ‘missing dad’ complex while Pete had a ‘moocher dad’ complex. And both brought that ‘baggage’ into their relationship. In the end, they made their relationship work even with all the flaws.
If you’re looking for a comedy to watch before Christmas rolls around, this is it. I guarantee it will lift your mood!
‘This Is 40’ hits theaters on December 21.
