Mini Golf MatchUp has taken the mobile gaming world by storm.
Since its release last Wednesday, the game, developed by Scopely, has shot up app-store charts and is #1 in the U.S. and 24 other countries.
This game, available on both Android and iOS devices, features the turn-based multiplayer platform made famous by fan favorites like Words With Friends and Draw Something.
Gameplay is straightforward and intuitive on MGMU. At the start of each hole, players can choose to drop the ball anywhere on the starting pad. From there, users touch the ball and drag their finger back – think Angry Birds – to determine where the shot goes and how fast it gets there. The touch controls are reliable and accurate, so users can only blame themselves if that putt doesn’t end up where you wish it had.
True to its arcade gaming roots, this game's courses are filled with obstacles that you probably wouldn’t find at your local mini-golf course. Courses are covered with cactuses, patches of grass that push your ball in the opposite direction, pyramids, and steep drops that must be avoided in order to finish the hole. Players get to retake one shot per game, so keep that in mind if you’re having an off day. It's also worth noting, the game’s bright and fun graphics look great on smart phone displays.
Mini Golf MatchUp is a multiplayer game, so you can either create an account or sync it with your Facebook. You can choose to either play your friends online or tee off against random users. Contrary to typical golf scoring, the highest score wins in MGMU, and users can earn more points by collecting coins and gems on each course. Users can unlock more courses and features in the game by using coins collected while playing.
Since the game is free, ads will be seen in-between holes, which may annoy some. The ads are similar to those found in other free games, though, and users can purchase an ad-free version of the game for $1.99
Altogether, Mini Golf MatchUp is a great way to pass time on your phone. The smooth interface, fun 3D graphics, and turn-based gameplay really make for a fun, potentially addicting mobile gaming experience.
