Miss America 2015 Kira Kazantsev speaks three languages, is an honors student with three majors and has strongly voiced her support for women's health.
For the talent part of the pageant, Kazantsev sang the Pharrell Williams’ tune “Happy” while banging a plastic red cup, noted the New York Daily News (video below).
Kazantsev, the former Miss New York, seems like the perfect Miss America, but last week she was criticized by conservatives for her internship at Planned Parenthood.
"It was close to my university and I care about women's health," Kazantsev told Cosmopolitan magazine. "It's really important that teens know what resources are available to them and learn to be respectful of their bodies and other peoples' bodies."
While that won her the support of liberals, a new report by Jezebel claims that Kazantsev and an unidentified friend were kicked out of a sorority for abusive hazing of young women who were pledging.
The alleged hazing incidents happened at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y., when Kazantsev was "Alpha Phi Sorority New Member Educator and Recruitment Committee President," reports Jezebel.
An unidentified source told Jezebel that in 2013, Kazantsev and her best friend made the lives of the girls pledging to the Alpha Phi Sorority "a living hell."
The source claims that Kazantsev was in charge when new pledges were subjected to abusive namecalling, mocked for their physical differences and forced to do activities that resulted in bruising.
On its website, Hofstra University bans hazing that includes "mistreatment by playing stunts or practicing abusive, humiliating or ridiculous tricks" and "harassment by exacting unnecessary, disagreeable, or difficult work or harassment by banter, ridicule or criticism."
Kazantsev and her friend were allegedly reported for "dirty pledging" and kicked out of Alpha Phi in the latter part of 2013.
When Jezebel contacted Hofstra University about the claims, a college rep replied, "Was this person, by chance, in Atlantic City last Sunday night?"
Unidentified Hofstra University students, who went to the college at the same time as Kazantsev, confirmed to Jezebel that Kazantsev was kicked out of her sorority.
The Miss America organization said in a statement to Jezebel:
Kira has been fully transparent with the MissAmerica Organization about her termination from the Alpha Phi sorority. It's unfortunate that this incident has been exploited to create a storyline that distracts from what we should be focusing on: Kira's impressive academic achievements at Hofstra University, including earning a triple major from the Honors College and her commitment to serving her community.
Kira is an exceptional ambassador for the MissAmerica Organization, and we are excited to be a part of her journey as a force for good across our nation, promoting education and service and working to empower young women.
