With Miley Cyrus Invite, has Marine Corps Ball Jumped the Shark?

Miley Cyrus is the latest celebrity to be asked to the Marine Corps Ball, Celebuzz is reporting. Private First Class Hart from Camp Pendleton extended the offer to Miley via video. There's no word yet on whether Miley will attend.

Is this Marine Ball-celebrity thing going too far? Actress Mila Kunis was the first recipient of a video invitation: Sergeant Scott Moore, who's currently on a tour of duty in Afghanistan, invited her via YouTube. Next was Justin Timberlake, who was invited by Corporal Kelsey de Santis. She's currently the only woman at the Martial Arts Center for Excellence in Quantico, Virginia. Both Timberlake and Kunis are going to attend the Ball.

Actress Betty White was also invited, by Sergeant Ray Moore. She declined because she's going to be shooting an episode of the TV show "Hot in Cleveland."

As far as my research shows, celebrities have never before attended the Marine Ball. So is this celeb influx turning an 86-year-old institution (no, not Betty White; I'm talking about the Marine Ball, which has been around since 1925) into a circus? How many more celebrities can they cram in there - can Britney Spears get an invite? How about Demi Lovato? What about the Marines who are unlucky in love - will we see desperate jarheads inviting Z-list celebrities in an attempt to be able to bring a celebrity - any celebrity - to the party?

Whatever happens, it's going to be hard to top Mila and Justin. Maybe everyone should just leave it at that, before this whole celebrity ball thing stops being cute and funny, and something terrible happens - like someone invites Carrot Top.
