The MTV Video Music Awards is always a raucous show filled with surprises, whether it's Madonna kissing Britney Spears. or Britney Spears dancing with a snake or, well, anything with Britney Spears. But last night's show in New York City had a Spears-less moment that perhaps tops all of those. Country-pop singer Taylor Swift was in the middle of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video, when rapper Kanye West jumped onstage:
West is no stranger to odd outbursts at the MTV awards. In 2007 he threw a notorious tantrum backstage because he didn't win any awards. But last night was a new low.
"I was standing on the stage and I was really excited because I had just won the award," Swift said after the show at Radio City Music Hall. "And then I was really excited because Kanye West was on the stage. And then I wasn't so excited anymore after that."
Because of West's stage intrusion, Swift never got a chance to finish her speech. But Beyonce herself rectified that, when she won the night's top award, Video of the Year:
In the end, West did apologize. Writing on his blog in his standard all-caps format, West said:
"I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!"
And proving a teenager can be mature, the 19-year-old Swift refused to get into a war of words with West, whom she had never met before. "I don't know him and I don't want to start anything."
