Kanye West Performs for Brutal Dictator's Family (Video)

Rapper Kanye West spent his Labor Day weekend in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where he performed at the wedding reception of Aisultan Nazarbayev, who is the grandson of Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev.

West was reportedly paid $3 million for the performance (video below), which shocked human rights activists because of Nazarbayev's brutal history.

Nazarbayev has ruled Kazakhstan for 23 years and his administration reportedly tortured oil workers who demonstrated for fair pay, reported the BBC.

Nazarbayev has also opposed free press in Kazakhstan, noted The Economist.

One of his political opponents, Zamanbek K. Nurkadilov, who threatened to exposed corruption in Nazarbayev's administration was murdered, noted The New York Times.

West was reportedly a personal guest of Nazarbayev.

"Kazakhstan is a human rights wasteland. The regime crushes freedom of speech and association. Someone like Kanye, who makes a living expressing his views, would find himself in a prison under Nazarbayev’s rule," Thor Halvorssen, president of the Human Rights Foundation, toldMother Jones.

West's girlfriend Kim Kardashian caused a stir in 2012 when she traveled to Bahrain where the government cracked down on its citizens with tear gas, noted the Associated Press.
