Bringing new meaning to the phrase “hurts so good,” Johnny Depp has just revealed that he hurt his back so badly on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides that “…it was so horrible that I actually started to like it.”
Depp spoke about the “monstrous” injury in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The actor, who is once again playing Captain Jack Sparrow in the latest installment, admits he spent 3 weeks of the shoot in agony after a stunt went wrong.
“I must have done something to my back during a stunt and ended up with this bad sciatic situation. It was this horrible, grinding electricity going through me,” he told the Reporter.
“I kept shooting; there was no choice. I’d just limp on set. It was monstrous, man – so horrible that I actually started to like it! It was bad, and I had it a good three weeks to a month. But I got used to it and kind of missed it when it was gone.”
But Depp says it wouldn’t put him off a 5th installment of the franchise, although he would like to see a bigger break between the 4th and 5th movies than there was between the first 3: “We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they’re special to me.”
