ESPN Suspends Ron Franklin; Called Jeannine Edwards "Sweetcakes"

Publish date:

Just before the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Friday, Jeannine Edwards and Ron Franklin attended a pre-game production meeting with ESPN staffers.

Also in attendance were ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore. At some point during the meeting the group began to discuss Rod Gilmore’s wife, Alameda, being elected as mayor (CA).

The three men talked, and when sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards chimed in, Ron Franklin said smugly: “Why don’t you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes.”

Obviously shocked by the lack of respect that Ron Franklin had showed her, Jeannine Edwards responded by saying, “Don’t call me sweetcakes, I don’t like being talked to like that.”

Franklin then mocked, “Okay then, a–hole.”

Aha! One of the good ol’ boys . . . stuck in the 1950′s!

Jeannine Edwards reported the incident immediately with ESPN management and Ron Franklin was pulled from the Chick-fil-A Bowl. However, a last minute replacement could not be found and he still called the game along with Ed Cunningham and Jeannine Edwards. He was pulled from the Fiesta Bowl, and replaced by ESPN announcer Dave Lamont.

Ron Franklin signed a 2-Year agreement with ESPN back in July which calls for him to work 35 events per year.

ESPN is not commenting on his employment status at the moment.
