January High Stakes: High on Hansen

Gus Hansen, who had one of his worst years of online poker in 2010, was consistently one of the best players last month.

The rest of the winners are relatively unsurprising with Di Dang, Patrik Antonius and Scott Palmer in the mix.

Dang is technically the biggest winner if you include his PokerStars “ilvdnfl” account.

Meanwhile we’re betting the second biggest loser in January will come as a huge surprise to high stakes fans.

All of the following accounts are on Full Tilt Poker unless otherwise noted:

Top 5 Winners

1. Gus Hansen: $908,000

Gus Hansen is off to a killer start in 2011 but the Great Dane should be cautious heading into the rest of the year.

Last year he got off to a great start spinning his way up to nearly $2 million in profit before going on a catastrophic downswing that saw him bottom out at -$3.55 million in late summer.

2. Urindanger: $898,000

Di Dang, who has never recorded a losing year online, is already up nearly $1 million in 2011.

Known for playing a great deal against Gus Hansen, Dang instead won a huge amount from cadillac1944 this month.

Dang’s numbers are far more impressive once you take the fifth biggest winner into account.

3. URnotINdanger2: $862,000

Scott “URnotINdanger2” Palmer likes to fly under the radar but that doesn’t keep him from stacking hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Maryland-native was red-hot in January, recording huge wins against Kpederson, Patrik Antonius and Tom “durrrr” Dwan.

Patrik Antonius

4. Patrik Antonius: $835,000

Patrik Antonius had a slow year in 2010. He didn’t lose millions of dollars but he didn’t win them either.

It’s something that he seems to want to rectify in 2011 as he’s already up to $835,000 in profit.

If he can just continue that pace for 11 more months he’ll be closing in on $12 million by the end of the year.

5. Ilvdnfl (PokerStars): $797,000

ilvdnf is widely-considered to be Di Dang’s PokerStars account, which means the young high stakes pro is easily the biggest winner in 2011 with close to $1.7 million in profit.

If Dang were to stop playing poker for the rest of the year there’s a good chance he would be one of the top 10 biggest winners.

Top 5 Losers

1. NEKOTYAN: -$837,000

NEKOTYAN is rumored to be Russian Vitaly Lunkin, who won close to $3 million at the 2009 WSOP.

If it is Lunkin, at least he has cash to spare.

Normally a Limit Hold’em specialist the NEKOTYAN account lost more than $300k to Gus Hansen in $500/$1,000 Cap PLO alone.

2. Phil Ivey: -$612,000

Full Tilt legend Phil Ivey had a shockingly bad start to 2011.

Although he played only 581 hands he still managed to lose over half a million dollars.

Down sound the alarm bells just yet though. Ivey has dug himself into early holes several years running and always found a profit by the time the year ends.

There’s also those Macau live high stakes cash games where Ivey was rumored to have won a considerable amount of money.

3. Sauce123 (PokerStars): -$556,000

Ben “Sauce123” Sulsy had an absolutely disastrous month on PokerStars.

The U.S. player took part in over 10,000 hands but there’s a chance he wishes he had avoided the tables all together month.

4. Kpederson: - $543,000

The Kpederson account, owned by Richard Lyndaker, has only been active in the high stakes games for a few months and, after a terrible January, it wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see it disappear entirely.

In January Kpederson lost over $500k and was absolutely hammered by URnotINdanger2 at $200/$400 No-Limit Hold’em on several occasions.

We’ll see if Lyndaker can turn it around this month of if he’ll slip down to some smaller stakes.

5. cadillac1944: -$478,000

cadillac1944 has shown he isn’t afraid to tackle some of the highest games available online but it hasn’t exactly worked out for him.

After losing $1.8 million in 2010, cadillac1944 got right back to work in the first month of 2011 by losing $478k.

On plus side he’s got 11 months to get even.
