Marvel announced today that the Avengers sequel its newest villain: Ultron, who is going to be played by James Spader.

Spader currently stars in NBC’s spy drama, “The Blacklist,” and viewers might also recognize him from his short role on NBC’s “The Office” or for his appearance in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.”

While Spader, a three-time Emmy award winner, was cast as powerful, psychotic robot villain, Marvel did not say whether he will perform motion-capture for his character, like Mark Ruffalo does for his character, the Hulk, or if he will only be providing the voice for the villain.

At a Comic-Con panel in July, director Joss Whedon teased the sequel's storyline, notes the Hollywood Reporter.

"We're doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron," Whedon said, adding that “Ultron was the chief villain when I read the book. He's been the Avengers villain for so long, I was amazed anyone was surprised it would be him in the movie."

Whedon also told Entertainment Weekly about his plans for the Spader’s evil character.

“Think of him as a droid with one hell of a set of daddy issues,” Whedon said. “As a character I love [Ultron], because he’s so pissed off. I knew right away what I wanted to do with him. He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers … He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch.”

A new Avenger, Quicksilver, will also be joining the Avengers team in the sequel.

The film, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” is set for release on May 1, 2015.
