Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis On Board for "Hobbit"

It’s official: Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis have both signed on to reprise their roles in Peter Jackson‘s two-part adaptation of The Hobbit.

After months of speculation, The Hollywood Reporter confirms that McKellen will return to Middle Earth as wizard Gandalf, and Serkis will re-assume motion-capture duties as Gollum.

The news follows a previous report that Elijah Wood is also on board, and will reprise his role as Frodo. Cate Blanchett is also confirmed to be reprising her role as Galadriel.

The website says Orlando Bloom has an offer to return as elf archer Legolas, but no official confirmation he’s on board as yet.

Deadline also reports that Ian Holm and Christopher Lee have been approached to return, too.

Production on The Hobbit is scheduled to begin mid-February in New Zealand.
