George Clooney Offers His Take on Ben Affleck as ‘Batman’

The announcement that Ben Affleck would play Batman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie was met with a predictably mixed reaction.

The diehard loyalists who fell in love with Christian Bale’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader would have been displeased regardless of who got the green light. Critics of Affleck’s acting simply would have preferred anyone else. Then there's the third group – folks who don’t really care all that much. They recognize that Affleck isn’t one of Hollywood’s best talents, but are willing to give him a shot because, well, who cares?

Recently, George Clooney sat down with Empire Magazine to promote Gravity. Predictably, talked turned to Affleck as Batman, given that Clooney is recognized as being one of the worst Batmans of all time.

“I am the least qualified person to comment on anyone playing the role of Batman since I so terribly destroyed the part,” Clooney admitted. “I tend to look at it like this — let’s just see what the movie is before everyone starts beating [Affleck] up. He is a smart man, he knows what he is doing.”

It’s worth noting: Clooney and Bale both played the Batman characters that were written for them. The former proved in a series of movies where he essentially plays the same guy under a different name that he can be dark. Had his Batman role been the dark one that Bale got for his trilogy, there is a reasonable case to be made that he would’ve done a lot better.
