When news came out that Charlie Hunnam had officially pulled out of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, the obvious questions everyone had were pertaining to why he was leaving and who would replace him. After all, neither Hunnam nor the execs bankrolling Fifty Shades had offered a legitimate reason, and speculation about who should play Christian Grey wasn’t even halted when Hunnam got the role.
What flew a bit under the radar, however, is what this news meant for Dakota Johnson. Because she is a lesser known actress, people have sort of forgotten that the initial backlash to her landing the part of Anastasia Steele was just as loud as Hunnam’s. The reason why it became a bit muted as time passed is because, at the end of the day, Fifty Shades’ more hardcore fans are women, and they put more stock into Christian than they do Anastasia.
You will recall, when Johnson and Hunnam were initially announced as the leads for Fifty Shades of Grey, the thing they were sold on was their chemistry. That’s apparently why they landed the roles, because they had some sort of inexplicable, magical chemistry that no other stars in Hollywood could replicate. Well, if that was the sole reason for Johnson landing her part – then what’s the justification for her keeping it now?
Some reports are saying that Christian is being cast with Johnson in mind. Maybe. Or maybe whoever ultimately lands the part of Christian will blow the casting people away so much so that they’ll tailor Anastasia to him. And given the lukewarm feelings that fans have for their Anastasia, why would anyone hesitate in yanking her off the film as well if someone better comes along?
Answer: They won’t.
Everyone is saying all the right things at the moment, but make no mistake about it: If a new pair of actors catch people’s eye over the next few weeks, Johnson will get the boot as well.
