It’s no secret that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson weren’t the people who fans wanted to see starring in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie. The problem, really, is that they weren’t even the second, third or fourth choices. Putting aside the undisputed favorites like Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder and Alexis Bledel, there was an entire group of lesser known Hollywood rising stars who would have gotten a much warmer reception.
The reason why EL James and Co. caught so much heat for Hunnam and Johnson isn’t because they were either too famous or too unknown, it’s because they just didn’t fit the roles the way fans hoped the ultimate selections would.
That being said, the cast is what it is at this point. It has been made abundantly clear over the past few weeks that the choices are final, and that no amount of whining or complaining will change that reality. So what happens next? Well, what happens next is that fans adjust.
Hunnam, for his part, wants to help with that process. After hearing all the questions and doubts regarding whether or not he was fit for the part of Christian, the Sons of Anarchy star did an interview in which he tried to reassure everyone that he was up to the task.
"You know what, I had such a baptism of fire with regards to sexuality on camera at the beginning of my career,” he said. “I starred in the British Channel 4 miniseries Queer as Folk, where I played a young, gay character, and there were some incredible, explicit sex scenes on that show...Now I am 16 years older and more mature so I don't anticipate them being too much of a problem. It's like anything else, just an exciting challenge."
In a different interview, this one with The Hollywood Reporter, Hunnam also indicated that he full faith in his co-star’s ability to pull off the role of Anastasia.
"As soon as we got in the room and started reading with Dakota, I knew that I definitely wanted to do it, because there was a tangible chemistry between us,” he said. “If felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it.”
So there you go.
Buckle in folks, one way or another, this movie is going to be interesting. It remains to be seen if it’ll be for all the right or wrong reasons, though.
