Comedian Chris Rock made a lavish introduction of Eddie Murphy tonight on the 40th anniversary special of "Saturday Night Live."
Rock recalled how Murphy inspired him to be a comedian and saved the variety series from cancellation in the early 1980s (video below).
"If Saturday Night Live hadn't hired Eddie Murphy, this show would've lasted about half as long as Baywatch," said Rock.
Murphy later walked onstage to a standing ovation, reports Mediaite.com.
“This show is such a big part of who I am and my life and I am so happy to be back here, and it’s just a magical feeling, actually it feels like going back to my old high school, kinda of, it's a good feeling,” said Murphy.
Murphy did not do impressions or any of the characters , but there was an awkward pause when he went to commercial, noted The Hollywood Reporter.
Many SNL fans tweeted their disappointment about Murphy's appearance.
