I always make it a point to stop by SEGA’s booth each year, there’s a couple of reasons why. First, they always have some quality titles to show, and second, they have some of the friendliest reps of any game developer/publisher. Now, of course, I didn’t get my one wish for this year’s E3, which would have been the announcement of Shenmue 3, but there are some games to look forward to.
Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing Transformed is shaping up nicely. In addition to the cart racing of the first game boating and flying have been thrown into the mix. Just like the first game there is a ton of fan service here. Some new characters worth noting are Gillius Thunderhead from the Golden Axe series, Vyse from Skies of Arcadia, and Joe Musashi of Shinobi fame. There were three playable levels, Golden Axe, Super Monkey Ball, and Panzer Dragoon. The Panzer Dragoon level was particularly cool. We will get to see some of the characters from the first game return, but there will also be new additions from familiar SEGA franchises.
Hell Yeah! is a cutely deranged action/plat former. The game takes place in Hell, which you may have guessed from the title. It’s all about setting out to get revenge on any demon, ghoul, or monster that happened to see some leaked photographs of you, the Prince of Hell, in a bit of an embarrassing situation. There are various power ups throughout the game and you’ll be collecting money to purchase tons of goofy items from the local convenience store in Hell. A couple of things I noticed were Terry Bogard’s hat from SNK’s Fatal Fury series and a bit of an homage to Plants vs. Zombies. The game plays well and the controls are tight. It’s interesting, the game revolves around miniboss fights. Each fight involves a mini-game like something you would see in Wario Ware to finish off the badie. Hell Yeah! will be released this summer on XBLA, PSN, & PC.
I’m saving the best for last, Aliens Colonial Marines may be the hit of the show. Out of all the games that were playable, this is the one that I am most excited about. In the playable demo it was a six on six match up, Aliens versus Marines. SEGA reps were using the Aliens, so I can only speak about the gameplay from the Marine’s perspective, but it was great fun. It was like getting sucked into Aliens with Ripley and Hicks. All of the sound effects are spot on, the battle rifle and motion tracker in particular sound amazing. This looks to be a solid FPS with a lot of fan service. If you’re a fan of the series I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Check out the amazing sculptures of the Alien Queen and the load lifter that were on display.
Finally, there were downloadable titles present. Jet Set Radio looks amazing in HD. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is an amazing fighting game and plays phenomenally well online. I didn’t get to try out Super Monkey Ball Banana Splitz, but that was also present. It was a good show from SEGA with some solid titles, now let’s just hope we’ll get some news about a Shenmue HD remake and Shenmue 3. Check out the video below for a full tour of SEGA’s booth.
