E3 2014: Yoshi’s Woolly World Review

There were only two Nintendo games I was interested in checking out for myself at this year’s E3. One is the puzzle adventure Captain Toad Treasure and the second was the ultra-adorable Yoshi’s Woolly World.

Yoshi’s Woolly World introduces Mario’s dinosaur friend to a world filled with yarn, cloth, and textiles where he must leap, tie, and eat his way around. Did I mention it’s adorable?

The art style was the number one reason to check this sucker out. When you see a Yoshi plush come to live you can’t help but feel like a kid. Instead of eggs, you eat enemies and turn them into balls of yarn. You then use that yarn incapacitate and tie up piranha plants. Every single thing in this game looks like it was either woven together or stuffed. It’s the cutest thing there it. With HD graphics every little detail is shown. If you look closely, you can even see a little bit of frizz around Yoshi.

If you’ve played any of the previous Yoshi’s Island games, you know what you’re in for. Wholly World is almost identical in play style. You eat enemies, turn them into eggs (now yarn balls), shoot them out, ground pound, and flutter jump. You know, the usual. The biggest difference, when it comes to gameplay, is that there is no annoying baby Mario there to get knocked off your back and cry like the little annoying baby he is. That and this is a two player co-op game.

There are two things you need to know about Yoshi’s Wholly World. One is that it’s being developed by Good-Feel. They are the team that made Kirby’s Epic Yarn. So they’ve done this sort of adorable thing before. Thing is, Kirby’s Epic Yarn wasn’t originally supposed to be a Kirby game. Good-Feel changed their plans at some point in the development process to incorporate Kirby into the title. Due to this, the game felt like a game featuring Kirby instead of a Kirby game proper (that makes sense?). This time around, Good-Feel went into this knowing they were making a Yoshi game.

The other thing, and this might be a deal-breaker, is that Wholly World may be too easy. Good-Feel’s previous game was extremely easy. The only consequence for dying was a loss of points. It feels like this game has the same thing going for it. At least the few levels I’ve played were extremely easy. I was playing with someone who has never played a Yoshi game before. The only time I ran into issues was when I jumped off cliffs or went ahead of player two. But then the only thing that happened was my Yoshi would turn into an egg and float back to the other player.

Yoshi’s Wholly World may be on the easy side, but we need more high quality beautiful games for younger/inexperienced audiences. If there is one thing Nintendo knows, its great level design and that equates to fun. So maybe Wholly World may not be for hardcore gamers, but there’s an audience out there for this. If you want to start picking up games as a hobby, it wouldn’t hurt to try this title out.

Yoshi’s Wholly World is due out sometime in 2015 for the Wii U.
