Dreamworks Offered $75 Million for 3 More 'Breaking Bad' Episodes

Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, announced during his keynote speech at the Mipcom Mart in Cannes, France that he offered $75 million for three more episodes of the AMC drama "Breaking Bad."

"The last series cost about $3.5 million an episode, so they would make more profit from these three shows than they made from five years of the entire series," stated Katzenberg, noted the Daily Mail.

“I said [to them], ‘I’m going to create the greatest pay-per-view television event for scripted programming anybody’s ever done,'" he recalled.

The three episodes would have picked up after the show's finale, but Katzenberg admitted, “I was nuts for the show. I had no idea where this season was going.”

If the deal had been successful, Katzenberg planned to break each TV episode into a 6-minute webisodes that would have aired on the Internet over one month. Katzenberg was planning to charge viewers between 50 to 99 cents per webisode, reports Variety.

"I share the story with you only to tell you that I have the courage of my convictions in this. I just think that there is a whole new platform for [short form] entertainment... and the higher the quality of the stuff that fills it, the higher people will be paid for the work that they are doing there," Katzenberg told Mipcom.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Katzenberg paid $33 million for the YouTube channel "AwesomenessTV," which currently has 909,000 subscribers and 176 million views.

AwesomenessTV is now a multichannel network (MCN) with  a total of 73,000 channels and 20 million subscribers.
