While co-anchoring the TODAY show, Brooke Shields voiced her opinion about Miley Cyrus’ performance at MTV’s Video Music, describing it as “a bit desperate.”
Shields has a personal connection with the star as she appeared on the Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana” as Cyrus’ mom
"I was Hannah Montana's mother!" she told TODAY's Willie Geist, then jokingly added, "Where did I go wrong?"
On a more serious note, Shields – who transitioned from child star to adulthood in the public eye herself – was concerned for the direction Cyrus’ career is taking.
"I just want to know who's advising her, and why [the VMA display] is necessary... [Our children] can't watch that ... I feel like it's a bit desperate," she said.
Shields related her experience of taking her daughters to see a “Hannah Montana” concert then later seeing Cyrus performing as herself. She said the Cyrus concert had “a very different vibe." Shields noticed Cyrus did not take as much time to say talk to her children and throughout the concert namely it seemed that Cyrus was doing trying to push her “Hannah Montana” persona as far away from her image as possible.
"You could see her trying so hard to go against [her Disney channel image]," Shields said. "She can sing beautifully, and I feel like if she lets that lead, rather than let her bottom lead ... [She's] trying so, so hard."
Shields compared Lady Gaga – who’s known for having eccentric performances – to Cyrus’ VMA performance.
"[Gaga has] a genius behind all of it; it's not just display," unlike Cyrus, Shields said.
Still, Shields did have some praise for Cyrus.
"She went for it," she said. "You've got to give her some credit. We're all talking about her … every station is talking about her."
