Billboard Adds YouTube Data to Chart Ranking Measurement

This past Wednesday Billboard made a change to the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The change includes adding YouTube streaming data into the chart’s ranking. As a result, “Harlem Shake” is now the No. 1 song on this chart.

Billboard posted this statement on their website explaining the recent change:

Billboard is now incorporating all official videos on YouTube captured by Nielsen's streaming measurement, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio into the Hot 100 and the Hot 100 formula-based genre charts – Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, R&B Songs, Rap Songs, Hot Latin Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Dance/Electronic Songs – to further reflect the divergent platforms for music consumption in today's world.

According to Huffington Post, the “Harlem Shake” was released in May of last year but didn’t receive popularity until the recent 30-second viral videos. The song is also not played on the radio often, but because of the large amount of views and videos with the song it’s ratings have boosted.

Other songs that were affected positively by Billboard’s addition of YouTube data are Rihanna’s “Stay” (went from number 57 to 3),  Psy’s “Gangnam Style” (moved up from 48 to 26) and Drake’s “Started From the Bottom” (went from number 63 to 10).
