George Zimmerman’s defense attorney, Don West, began his opening statement with a knock-knock joke on Monday, which garnered little amusement from the jury.
West prefaced his joke with a plea to the jury not to hold Zimmerman guilty if they felt the joke was bad or inappropriate, but to hold West guilty instead. He added that the jury was the perfect audience for his joke, though admitted that it was a strange thing to do under the circumstances.
West also said that it would be better to laugh than cry during the case.
“Knock-knock,” West began. “Who’s there? George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman who? All right. Good. You’re on the jury.”
The all-female jury was straight-faced until West broke the silence.
“Nothing?” West asked, and the jury laughed. “That’s funny. After what you folks have been through the last two or three weeks."
The prosecution seemed unamused.
Moments before West’s joke, he also attempted to discuss his mother and her sage advice, though the prosecution objected before he could reveal her words. The story would likely have been another attempt to appeal to the all-female jury.
