Vons Says Zendaya Incident Was Not Racism (Video)

Actress and singer Zendaya has alleged a store clerk at Vons supermarket behaved in a racist manner towards her (video below).

She alleged that the woman refused to sell her $400 worth of gift cards Sept. 6 because of her skin color, but a spokesperson for Vons gave a different version of events to TMZ.

“The lady that was helping us... I don't think she was a huge fan of our skin tone,” Zendaya said on Snapchat, People reported.

Zendaya stated that the woman threw her wallet back at her, causing her cards to fall out.

“‘You can't afford this,' is how she looked at me,” she said.

“I can't make this s--- up!” she added.

later in the clip, Zendaya said, “This is what we deal with,” before her male friend added, “Because we’re black.”

Zendaya explained that a manager stepped in to process the purchase.

“Long story short, there's so much progress to be done in our world,” said Zendaya.

A Vons spokesperson contradicted the actress’s account, telling TMZ the store has a policy of only allowing customers to buy $200 worth of gift cards on a credit card. It added that a store manager made an accommodation to permit Zendaya to make the $400 purchase.

The incident occurred just days after Zendaya celebrated her 20th birthday.

According to Daily Mail, Zendaya went shopping in her luxury Lexus RC 350 Sept. 2 to Fred Segal in West Hollywood.

The issue of racism came up in a previous incident involving Zendaya when an anchor for E! News made comments about her Oscars outfit.
