New reports say women are beginning to cancel their memberships with Planet Fitness out of fear for their safety following controversy surrounding a transgender woman using the female locker room.
Last week, news broke about a woman having her membership revoked after complaining about a transgender woman using the female locker room at a Planet Fitness in Midland, Michigan. The woman, Yvette Cormier, said the trans woman, Carlotta Sklodowska, looked “like a man” as she walked into the locker room, and out of fear for her own safety, Cormier complained to employees.
When employees informed her they don’t discriminate against people based on their gender identities, the angry member demanded action. Cormier ultimately lost her membership, not because of her beliefs, but as the gym noted in a statement, due to her “inappropriate behavior.”
“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members,” the gym said in a statement. “Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity. The membership of the member in question was not canceled as a result of complaints about the policy, as we welcome all feedback from our members. Rather, the manner in which she expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that club management deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled.”
Inquisitr now reports that women all over are starting to cancel their Planet Fitness memberships out of “concern about their safety in locker rooms.” Michigan State Representative Gary Glenn echoed those sentiments, claiming that Planet Fitness’s “in-your-face” policy “threatens the safety of female members.”
Do you believe Planet Fitness’s “self-reported gender identity” policy make women less safe?
