28-year-old Angelique Campbell of Jersey City, New Jersey made headlines this week because of the shocking comment she made when her husband was killed by officers after he ambushed and killed a 23-year-old cop.
“If that's the case, he should've took more with him,” Angelique Campbell said. “If they was going to stand over my husband and shoot him like a fucking dog, he should've took all of them the f*** out. That's how I feel. God forgive me, but that's how I feel. Sorry for the officer’s family. That’s, you know, whatever. But, at the end of the day, [Lawrence] got a family, too. All they care about is the officer.”
After her shocking comments made the news, many expressed outrage and equated her sentiments to her husband’s crime. People all over the world were equally outraged that the community where Lawrence Campbell lived memorialized him and treated him like a hero despite the fact that he ambushed police and killed 23-year-old rookie Officer Melvin Santiago.
Now, Angelique has publicly apologized for what she said.
“I was very angry and upset,” Campbell said. “I'd just lost my husband and I'd heard certain things the officer’s family had apparently said. I shouldn’t have said what I did and my condolences go to his family. I am not trying to excuse what Lala [Lawrence] did, but he was not in his right mind. He was not a monster.”
Campbell says that her husband was likely high on PCP and not taking medication for mental illness when he murdered Santiago. She also admits that her husband got “hooked back up with the wrong people.”
