Convicted Poisoner Gets Dose Of Her Own Medicine

Lacey Spears, 28, was found guilty in 2015 of killing her son, Garnett, by adding a lethal dose of salt to his hospital feeding tube.

Garnett, who was born in 2009, was admitted to hospital dozens of times with a wide range of symptoms, The Washington Post reports.

Spears ran a blog devoted to her son’s many health crises. Entitled “Garnett’s Journey,” the mother seemed proud of how many times her son got sick. “My Sweet Angel Is In The Hospital For The 23rd Time,” boasts one blog entry.

No one was suspicious until Garnett’s final illness in January 2014, when doctors concluded the amount of sodium in the 5-year-old's body was “metabolically impossible,” at which point mother Spears became a suspect.

She has since been diagnosed with Munchausen by proxy, or factitious disorder, which Mayo Clinic defines as a “serious mental disorder in which someone deceives others by appearing sick, by purposely getting sick, or by self-injury.”

Ironically, Spears has been getting a dose of her own medicine in prison, reports the Daily Mail. According to her sister, prisoners who work in the kitchen frequently pour an excessive amount of salt on Spears’ meals.

She has refused offers to be separated from the general population, preferring salty food to isolation at the prison in Westchester County, New York.

Despite evidence to the contrary, Spears maintains her innocence, blaming the hospital for the death of her son. She is currently serving a sentence of 20 years to life.
