Bicyclist Recovering After Being Dragged For Half Mile

A Texas man is facing charges after hitting a bicyclist and dragging her for nearly 1/2 mile.

The incident occurred on March 29 in, KXAN reported. Artemio Avila was reportedly driving through Austin when he collided with Elizabeth English.

According to police, English was dragged underneath the vehicle for several blocks before the driver took off. Witnesses described the vehicle to police.

Ella Feaster, a witness who lives near the site of the crash, told KVUE she could hear a woman screaming as she sat on her couch in her living room.

“There are so many cases, that I can make a living just representing cyclists,” attorney Brad Houston told KXAN, adding that the affidavit in English’s case was the most disturbing thing he’s ever read.

On March 30, an Austin Police Department officer found the vehicle. The truck reportedly had blood on the hood and fresh paint scrapes.

The officer arrested the car’s owner, Avila, but the suspect claimed he didn’t know anything about the crash. Avila told officers that his cousin lent the truck to a man named Chago.

Avila’s cousin, Jesus Aguilar, told police he didn’t know anyone by the name Chago, according to the arrest affidavit.

Avila eventually confessed to police, telling them he heard a “slight bump on the passenger side of the truck.”

“He was more worried about himself than the fact that he was killing a fellow human being and that is very disturbing,” said Houston.

Avila is being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer on $100,000 bail.

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer with Travis County Jail on Artemio Gomez-Avla on March 31,” the agency told KXAN, using an alternate name. “ICE is focused on smart and effective immigration enforcement that prioritizes the removal of convicted criminal aliens, recent border crossers and immigration fugitives who have failed to comply with final orders of removal issued by the nation’s immigration courts.”

English is still recovering in the hospital. She was communicating through a white erase board, but was still smiling and giving her friends and family a thumbs up. She can reportedly now talk after her breathing tube was removed.
