A Pennsylvania woman was arrested after allegedly stabbing her 8-day-old baby in the face because she thought he was possessed by the devil.
Tanishia Fielder reportedly told responding officers that she attacked her newborn baby with a kitchen knife after God instructed her to do so.
A criminal complaint obtained by WTAE states: "[According to Fielder,] God needed her to kill the baby, dismember him and throw him in the garbage because he was by the devil."
"I stabbed the baby," she reportedly told police. "That's the Devil's baby."
The infant was taken to a children's hospital where he is being treated for stab wounds near his right eye. No further information has been released about his condition.
The attack took place in Fielder's Swissvale apartment building on Sept. 8. According to the infant's father, he and Fielder were having an argument when she took a knife from the kitchen and began chasing him with it before turning the knife on their baby, stabbing him in the face.
The father then took the baby outside and appealed to his neighbors for help. Several witnesses told police they were trying to offer their assistance when Fielder ran out from behind the building and started coming after them with the knife, according to WTAE.
Police later found a weapon hidden beneath a dumpster behind the apartment building. Witnesses said they saw Fielder place the weapon there.
Neighbor Darius Warren said he called 911 after he saw the baby's father run outside with the baby in his arms.
"When the husband came out, I guess, he was holding the baby, running down, and the baby had blood in his eyes and stuff," he told KDKA. "[The father was] screaming, '911, call 911,' so I called 911. Then when I asked the lady [Fielder] what was going on, she kept saying, 'It's Satan's child, it's Satan's child' and all that."
"'It was the Devil's child.' That just kept coming out of her mouth," Warren said. "I'm like, wow, that's crazy."
He added that he knows Fielder and was shocked to learn she may have committed a crime like this.
"It was devastating," he said. "I have never seen anything like that before, especially from her. I never would have expected that."
Fielder remains in police custody. She faces a number of charges, including recklessly endangering another person, endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated assault.
