Woman Kills Herself After Sex Tape Lands Online

An Italian woman took her own life after she sent a taunting video of her having sex to her ex-lover, only to find the video later posted online.

Tiziana Cantone, from Naples, Italy, was filmed performing a sex act on a man. She then sent the video to her former boyfriend in an effort to make him jealous, but the lover uploaded the video to the internet, and Cantone was the victim of months of abuse and harassment, the Daily Mail reports.

Cantone, 31, took her own life after months of depression.

Cantone was apparently aware the video was being filmed, saying during the act, "Are you making a video?  Bravo."

The video was widely reported on by Italian media, with spoofs of the video being made by famous soccer players. The sex tape became so widely known that Cantone had to quit her job and change her name.

Prosecutors in her home city of Naples have opened an investigation into her death, leaving open the possibility of criminal charges being filed.

Her friend, Teresa Petrosino, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that Catone had wanted to "leave everything behind" after being "destroyed" by the abuse, reports the Daily Mail.

She added: "I wonder how anyone can be so fierce, how to rage against a girl who has not done anything wrong. I think that they should be ashamed of all those who have filled the web of insults and meanwhile secretly watched the images."

Revenge porn has become so mainstream that Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier of California introduced a bill against it, according to nonprofit advocacy organization Cyber Civil Rights Initiative.

According to the CCRI website:

The term 'revenge porn,' though frequently used, is somewhat misleading. Many perpetrators are not motivated by revenge or by any personal feelings toward the victim. A more accurate term is nonconsensual pornography (NCP), defined as the distribution of sexually graphic images of individuals without their consent.
