A woman in Florida says she is furious after a police officer who came to her home shot and killed her dog when it ran outside (video below).
The shooting, caught on surveillance video, shows the officer approaching the Florida City home on Oct. 20 and knocking on the front door. A few seconds later the door begins to open and a dog runs out of the house.
The officer then backs away and simultaneously draws his weapon, shooting the dog. The animal is seen lying on the ground, nearly motionless.
The woman, along with another woman in the house, can be seen angrily yelling at the officer and frantically attempting to do something to save the dog.
The dog’s owner, Gillian Palacios, told Local 10 News the officer visited the home to inform her she had left her car door open. Her dog was shot three times in the head by the officer.
“She was curious. She wasn't barking [and] she wasn't growling.” Palacios said. “There was no reason for him to think she was aggressive in any way."
Florida City police spokesman Ken Armenteros said that the department was “gathering all the facts.”
“We don't have the luxury of hindsight,” Armenteros said. “We have to use the information that is given to us in a split second. So, the officer has to make that decision with the information that he has available."
