An Alabama woman received a shock when pet birds she ordered for her 60th birthday were delivered dead.
Rhonda King, owner of Above A Cut at Rhonda’s, a hair salon in Grant, Alabama, ordered eight canaries from a seller in Texas for her 60th birthday, AL.com reports. King paid $600 for the birds, along with $100 in shipping fees.
The birds arrived three days late via USPS in a box that was smashed, and all the birds were dead.
"When my postmaster got there he told me, 'Well, your birds arrived, but they're not alive,'" King said. "This happened right in front of my clients. I was handed this box with tire tracks on it and bird carnage hanging out."
USPS claims it will reimburse King for the money spent on the birds as well as the shipping costs, and will apologize to her personally. King says no one from USPS has contacted her yet.
"I'm not trying to target the Postal Service," King said. "But, I'm distressed. Accidents happen, but in this case, there's been no accountability. These birds were in an approved box with wires to let them breathe, then it shows up at my business smashed."
USPS has the following notice on its website in regard to damaged packages:
Photos that clearly show the extent of damage will help with your case. For damaged claims, you’ll also need to provide an estimate of the repair costs from a reputable dealer.
If you received something damaged, please hang onto the original packaging and the damaged item until your claim is settled. You may be asked to take them to your local Post Office for inspection later. Please do not reship the package.
King says she contacted several representatives of USPS in both Alabama and Texas, but has yet to receive an explanation as to why the package was destroyed.
"I just wanted these birds for a happy lifestyle," King said. "Their singing is so beautiful, and I wanted that in my home."
