A woman in Georgia faces jail time for allegedly murdering the fetus she was carrying. Police arrested Kenlissa Jones, 23, after she reportedly delivered her fetus in an attempt to abort it.
Officials charged her with malice murder as well as possession of a dangerous drug. She was taken to Dougherty County Jail without bond. Jones is also the mother of a 1-year-old boy.
The incident occurred on June 6. According to law enforcement officials, Jones purchased an abortion pill, called Cytotec, on the Internet and took it. Later, the 23-year-old delivered the 5-month-old fetus in her car.
“At that point we didn’t even know she was pregnant. And so my first real reaction was like, why she keeping it away from us?” said Jones’ brother Rico Riggins. “Once she took those pills, from the way I’m understanding it, she was in a world of hurt for a while.”
After being taken to the hospital, the baby died.
“We lost what would have been a nephew for me,” Riggins said. “And everything. And then my sister.”
He added, “We’re coping the best we can. We’re hoping we get a lot of prayers. I don’t want anyone to be mad or upset with my family. At the end of the day they are doing the best we can.”
According to Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards, the case will probably go before a grand jury. Georgia law only allows abortions after the first trimester if they're performed in a licensed health facility.
Riggins has since been given guardianship of Jones’ son.
