Mother Of 5-Year-Old Boy Found In Septic Tank Faces Felony Murder Charge

A mother from Virginia has been charged with felony murder on Wednesday after her 5-year-old son was found dead in March in a septic tank located on their rental property.

Ashley White, 30, was charged with murder after Noah Terry Thomas was discovered dead in the septic tank on March 26, reports the Daily Mail. She is being held without bond.

White and the boy's father, Paul Thomas, 32, were already facing two felony and child abuse charges for leaving Noah and his infant sister, Abigail, alone at their house on March 22. At the time, White originally told police that White left Noah watchin cartoons while she took a nap with 8-month-old Abigal, CBS News reports. Then, when White woke up at 10:35 a.m., she couldn't find Noah.

The couple's story changed, however, and they said that White left the children at home while she drove Thomas her to work, according to Pulaski County Commonwealth's Attorney Mike Fleenor.

Kelsey Bulger, the assistant public defender representing White, said at a bond hearing in April that evidence showed her client had "left two children at home by themselves -- not that she intentionally harmed them or killed her child."

The child went missing for four days before authorities found him in a septic tank on their rental property in Dublin, in southwest Virginia. The cause of the boy's death has not been released, and the infant girl has since been removed from their home by social services.

Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis released a statement Wednesday about the new charges:

Under Virginia law this charge is defined as the accidental killing, contrary to the intention of the parties, while in the commission of some other felonious act. That other felonious act listed is the abuse and/or neglect of her child.

Thomas is also being held without bond, but no new charges have been filed against him.
