A woman from Salisbury, North Carolina, has been charged with child abuse after police say she fell asleep in her car Monday night at a Walmart parking lot — with her 2-year-old child awake and inside of the vehicle.
Brittney Dawn Lackey, 25, was spotted by a customer who claimed she was asleep in her green Hyundai Sonata and that a young child was awake in the car seat in the back, WBTV reports. Police were called, but say they were only successful in waking her up for a few minutes before she fell back asleep. They repeatedly yelled and knocked on the door, but the woman ignored them and turned up the volume of the music playing on her phone, according to the Salisbury Post.
After police managed to get Lackey to stand outside of her vehicle, she reportedly fell forward and nearly hit the ground but was caught by officers. Police contacted a family member and Rowan Social Services. The toddler was not injured, according to a police report.
Lackey was charged with one count of misdemeanor child abuse and was jailed under $1,000 bond. She reportedly remains in the Rowan County Detention Center.
This isn't the woman's first brush with the law. In 2010 she was reportedly convicted of driving while impaired, the Salisbury Post reports. She also has a pending 2015 case for driving while impaired, driving with her license revoked, and a citation for unsafe movement.
