Woman Arrested For Silently Standing By, Letting Boyfriend Beat 4-Year-Old Daughter To Death

A Philadelphia mother has been sentenced for doing nothing while her boyfriend heat her four-year-old daughter to death.

Josephine Brown, 27, was sentenced on Feb. 12 to four to eight years in state prison after pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and involuntary manslaughter.

Brown’s boyfriend, Edward Golphin, physically abused her daughter for over two years. Brown, who has learning disabilities, did nothing to stop the violence. According to prosecutors, Brown repeatedly covered up for Golphin while he continued to abuse her daughter.

In 2013, Brown’s daughter, Seanita, died after she was beaten by Golphin so severely that she had internal bleeding. Golphin was charged with first-degree murder, but was instead convicted of third-degree murder by a jury.

Prosecutor Christine Kemp acknowledged that Golphin manipulated and threatened Brown and acknowledged Brown’s disabilities, but said that it did not excuse her for lying to investigators about Golphin’s history of abusing her daughter.

“She watched him beat her child to death, and she covered it up,” Kemp said in court.

Kemp asked Judge Glenn B. Bronson to sentence Brown to 10 to 20 years in prison, which would fall outside of the sentencing guidelines for her conviction. Instead, Brown was sentenced to four to eight years, which did fall within the guidelines.

Brown asked her lawyer to read a statement she wrote to Judge Bronson.

“I always cry myself to sleep every night,” Brown wrote. “[Seanita] was my princess, my pride and joy. It makes me smile when I see her face.”

After her lawyer read the statement, Brown stood up and quietly said to the judge, “I’m sorry for what I did.”
