A Memphis woman is facing several charges after a child fell from the roof of her car as she was driving.
Witnesses were in shock when they saw a car speeding through a parking lot on May 13 on Mud Island, mostly because three children were riding on the roof of the vehicle, WREG reported.
The driver, 30-year-old Marnica Cooper, was reportedly driving up a ramp to leave the park when an 8-year-old boy fell off the roof of the vehicle and landed on his head, according to witnesses.
Witness Kearron Wilson told WREG that Cooper took several minutes to stop the car and check on the boy, who was “lifeless and limp.”
“You don’t understand, I wish I didn’t see it. That’s how messed up it would have you right now,” Wilson said. “I was praying to God she would slow down when she got to that hill, but she didn’t. She pressed on the gas."
Wilson heard the other children yelling at their mother, "at least six times ‘ma, ma ma stop!’ before she stopped the car.”
Police found Cooper at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital with five children, including the 8-year-old boy, who had an injury to his head. She attempted to run from officers, police said.
Investigators learned the 8-year-old boy was not alone on the roof of the car. A 12-year-old child was also on the roof, and a 9-year-old girl was riding on the trunk. Two 3-year-olds were in the vehicle, both without child seats or seat belts.
The girl riding on the trunk said she was Cooper’s daughter and that she tried warning her that the 8-year-old boy was “sliding off the roof of the car.” She said the boy “attempted to jump off the car but fell.”
Cooper is now facing charges of aggravated child abuse, child abuse and neglect, driving without a license, driving while license revoked, reckless driving and no proof of insurance.
